ABC's for Global Health Highlights Program Alignment with UN SDGs at St. Luke’s College of Medicine

On January 15, 2025, ABC’s for Global Health had the opportunity to present its impactful initiatives at the General Assembly for Students and Faculty at St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine. Dr. Gallo, representing ABC's for Global Health, shared valuable insights on how the organization aligns its programs with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During his presentation, Dr. Gallo introduced ABC’s for Global Health's mission and vision, emphasizing its role as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to delivering sustainable healthcare solutions in underserved communities across the Philippines. He outlined the organization's core programs and how they align with key SDGs, including:

  • SDG 2 - Ending hunger

  • SDG 3 - Good health and well-being

  • SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation

  • SDG 10 - Reduced inequalities

  • SDG 13 - Climate action

  • SDG 17 - Partnerships for the goals

Dr. Gallo emphasized, "Our programs are designed to create sustainable impact by addressing the root causes of healthcare challenges in underserved communities, ensuring no one is left behind."

ABC’s for Global Health’s Key Programs and Their Impact

Each of ABC’s for Global Health’s programs addresses multiple SDGs, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improving public health outcomes.

  • Medical Mobile Clinic (MMC) - Improving Access to Healthcare

The Medical Mobile Clinic program addresses SDGs 3, 10, and 17 by providing quality and affordable primary care services to underserved communities in Pampanga. This initiative aims to mitigate the risks of non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular conditions, which remain the leading cause of death among Filipinos. The MMC program has successfully partnered with local government units and other NGOs to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of its services.

  • Indigenous People Health - Addressing Malnutrition and Sanitation

Targeting SDGs 2, 3, 6, 10, and 17, this program focuses on improving the health outcomes of Aeta children, who face heightened risks of malnutrition due to intestinal parasitism, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water. The program was made possible through the collaboration of ABC’s for Global Health, the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Health (DOH), UP College of Public Health, Municipal Government of Floridablanca, Holy Angel University (HAU), San Fernando Electric Light and Power Company (SFELAPCO), San Miguel Corporation, PrimeWater, and UNILAB.

  • Public and Global Health Immersion - Building Awareness and Partnerships

This initiative addresses SDGs 3, 6, 10, 13, and 17 by providing both local and foreign students with immersive experiences in underserved communities. Through this program, students gain a deeper understanding of public and global health challenges. The program also emphasizes climate change awareness by adapting toolkit resources to the Philippine setting to better address climate-related illnesses.

  • Telemedicine - Expanding Healthcare Access

By integrating telemedicine into its healthcare model, ABC’s for Global Health improves patient follow-up, medication compliance, and overall health outcomes. This program targets SDGs 3, 10, and 17 by leveraging technology to bridge healthcare gaps in marginalized communities.

Dr. Gallo's presentation was complemented by insights from notable speakers dedicated to advancing sustainable development in the Philippines:

  • Hon. Dorothy Delarmente-Bagtig, MD (City Councilor of Quezon City) discussed local government initiatives aligned with the SDGs.

  • Albert Francis Domingo, MD MSc (Senior Health Official of the Philippines) presented on how Universal Health Care serves as a critical foundation in achieving all SDGs.

  • Jaime Carlo Montoya, MD MSc PhD CESO II (Executive Director, Philippine Council for Health Research and Development) highlighted findings from the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 - Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Science for Accelerating Transformations to Sustainable Development.

Driving Positive Change Through Collaborative Efforts
